SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH– A group of high school Un-PAC organizers met with Senator Romney’s Office yesterday to lobby him to support the For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1). Un-PAC is a nonpartisan, youth-led organization working to pass S.1., legislation that contains a variety of bipartisan, democracy-strengthening provisions.
The bill would address several issues the nation has seen with our democratic process, including election integrity and security, transparency, and making sure legal, eligible voters can exercise their Constitutional right to vote. It accomplishes these goals by creating automatic and same-day voter registration, expanding mail-in voting, ending partisan gerrymandering, requiring Super PACs to disclose their large donors, creating a multiple matching system for small donations, expanding federal support for voting system security, and requiring the development of a national strategy to protect U.S. democratic institutions.
The results of poll after poll highlight that many provisions and language of the For the People Act are widely popular among the majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike. However, so far no Senate Republicans have co-sponsored the legislation.
Considering that 76% of Republicans believe that there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, and more than 350 bills across 47 states have been introduced that restrict the right to vote for lawful citizens in 2021 alone, the young Utahns are looking to Repbublican Senator Romney to exemplify leadership on these pressing issues.
“This is not a partisan issue” said Eve Thompson-Brown, a sophomore and organizer with Un-PAC. “Senator Romney is in an incredible position right now to be the first of hopefully many Republican Senators to come, doing the best for their constituents across the country. There are many Senators, like Senator Romney, who understand that this act is what their constituents need and who agree with many, many aspects of it, but are hesitating… Senator Romney could cause a domino effect and influence other Senators to sign on to this bill, and win the support of our entire generation – including young conservatives – in the process.”
Un-PAC is a statewide organization activating students and young people to demand long overdue structural democracy reform so that we can actually solve urgent problems. Additional information can be found at www.un-pac.org, or on Twitter at @LetsUnPAC.
